Mass burial for earthquake victims in the Afrin district of Syria

Mass grave burial sites have been dug near an existing cemetery in the Afrin district in the northeast of Syria for victims of the powerful earthquake that struck the region on Monday. Hundreds are being buried at the site.

The Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, said that there are hundreds of families still buried under the rubble and that rescue operations are becoming increasingly difficult due to a shortage of search and rescue equipment.

The combined death toll from the earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria now nears 20,000.
